         De Pan Hlaing rivier in Myanmar heeft een belangrijke functie voor de afwatering van omringende gebieden en aanvoer van water voor de landbouw in deze gebieden. Deze functie wordt echter belemmerd door de getijdebeweging, de zeer sterke sedimentatie in de rivier en door intrusie van brak en zout water in het droge seizoen. Door de bouw van een spuisluis al of niet gecombineerd met een scheepvaartsluis kunnen deze knelpunten grotendeels worden opgelost.
