         In het research ICT programma gaat het om het leveren van ICT voorzieningen voor onderzoek. Denk aan high performance computing, netwerken en opslag. Maar ook het realiseren van data geschikt voor hergebruik, kennis uitwisseling, ondersteuning en samenwerking. Zowel in- als extern. Er wordt van onderzoekers verwacht dat onderzoek transparant is en dat onderzoeksresultaten reproduceerbaar zijn uit oogpunt van herhaalbaarheid, overzicht en recente fraude voorvallen in onderzoek. Het is daarom van belang dat alle stappen van meten van data tot rapport of artikel worden beschreven en kunnen worden teruggevonden zodat deze opnieuw uitgevoerd kunnen worden of onnodig (al uitgevoerd) onderzoek kan worden voorkomen. Een belangrijk, maar niet exclusief middel is het gebruik van een elektronisch labjournaal of „Electronic Lab Notebook” (ELN).
